- A day in Salcombe -

On a glorious early‑autumn day in the beautiful county of Devon, I had the absolute pleasure of exploring the shores of Salcombe.

This small coastal town has everything you could hope for — independent coffee shops, relaxed eateries, and that unmistakable seaside charm.

As you head east from the village along the road that hugs the shoreline, the views open up in the most breath taking way.

Rolling hills, impressive homes perched above the water, and the ever‑changing sea stretching out beside you — it’s the kind of walk that makes you slow down without even realising.

‘EVIL EYE’

As we sat down for a drink, a curious seagull perched confidently on a nearby post, watched us with that bold, unapologetic charm only seaside birds seem to have. It felt like the perfect welcome to Salcombe — a little character, a little humour, and a reminder that the coast always has its own personality.

A walk along the Coast

As we continued along the coastal path, a brief rain shower drifted in — the kind that arrives softly and leaves just as quickly. While we paused under the shelter of an overhanging tree, a little wagtail appeared on a wooden fence nearby. It hopped and flicked its tail as if dancing in the rain, completely unbothered by the weather. It was such a small, sweet moment, and one of those reminders that even the simplest sights can make a walk feel special.

We continued to follow the path, which seemed never‑ending in the best possible way — each turn offering new glimpses of turquoise sea and boats drifting lazily across the water. Eventually, the path opened out toward North Sands, and to our delight, a very familiar name came into view at the bottom of the slope: “The Winking Prawn.”

We were both instantly excited. Just a couple of weeks earlier, we’d watched The Holiday together at the cinema and loved every minute of it — so stumbling upon the restaurant featured in the film felt like a little cinematic surprise waiting just for us.

We just had to go in and tried a variety of their lunch options, which were all delicious! I would highly recommend!

The Sea Tractor and the Journey Home.

After eating, we carried on along the path, eventually reaching another quiet inlet where the landscape opened up once more. This is where we caught the iconic sea tractor, trundling us gently out through the shallows to meet the little boat waiting offshore.

The ride back to Salcombe was wonderfully peaceful and surprisingly inexpensive, offering a completely new perspective of the coastline.

From the water, we could see the soft curve of the bay, the shifting colours of the sea, and even the atmospheric ruins of the old castle watching over the estuary.

It was the perfect way to end the walk — calm, scenic, and full of that unmistakable Devon charm.

What the photos don’t show…

Although the walk was stunning, it was definitely on the longer side — with a few steep hills that really made themselves known on the way back.

Once you leave the town, there aren’t many places to stop comfortably for a sit down break, and food or drink options become scarce until you reach North Sands. It’s worth being prepared, especially if you’re visiting on a warm day or walking with little ones.

Parking in Salcombe was also a bit of a challenge. We ended up leaving the car right at the top of the hill and walking down into town, which was lovely at the start of the day… but quite the climb on the way back.

Still, despite the hills and the distance, the views, the wildlife, the sea tractor, and the whole atmosphere made it completely worthwhile — the kind of day that stays with you long after you’ve left the coast behind.

I hope you enjoyed reading about our little adventure in Salcombe — if you decide to do the walk yourself, I’d love to hear how you get on.

Best Wishes,

Kat
